About

In the Fall of 1970 I met my mentor Prof. Dr. William Hermanns (1895-1990) while working on my B.S. in Materials Science at San Jose State University and began assisting him with his manuscripts.  I subsequently earned my M.S. in Materials Science at Stanford University in 1975 under my graduate adviser Dr. William Tiller.  I assisted Dr. Hermanns for almost 20 years until his death in 1990 in caring for him, research, organization and editing of his manuscripts, whether in English or German.  He adopted me when I was 30 years old, as he had no children of his own and wanted me to carry on his work.  We were able to publish two of Dr. Hermanns books:  The Holocaust – from a Survivor of Verdun (Harper & Row, 1972) and Einstein and the Poet – In Search of the Cosmic Man (1983, Branden).   I with Dr. Hermanns worked on 5 book length German manuscripts, 12 book length English manuscripts, over 500 Gedichte and over 600 Poems.  My Dad Donald L. Norton who provided for my childhood and education, passed away a day after many family and friends celebrated with him his 92nd birthday in 2016 with his wife of 69 years, my Mom Mary and a sister, by his side with hospice in the house which they raised me and my 7 siblings, and I love them both dearly and in gratefulness, but my adopted “spiritual” father comes out of choice as an adult seeking to fulfill my True Purpose and needing that guidance that a mentor brings outside of family dynamics and limitations.  I have set up this blog to share my insights and artistic works on this life path of understanding, being and living as a Cosmic Man, as Einstein defined the term to my adopted father during their 34-year friendship: “We must create a Cosmic Man, a man ruled by his conscience.” (Einstein & the Poet – In Search of the Cosmic Man [Branden, 1983]).

You can also check out the website I have built and continue to expand in my adopted father’s honor, uploading poetry and essays to the online archive:  www.williamhermanns.com .  His book Einstein and the Poet–In Search of the Cosmic Man (1983, Branden Press) is avaliable in paperback or e-book for sale at Amazon.com.

I live with my loving partner Elaine B. Holtz, and you can check out the website of her Radio Show Women’s Spaces at www.womensspaces.com which I help produce.
